* CHAPTER 6 *

THE LINE-UP

The next few days were tough. Even though Anna, Bethany, and Jasmine were confident, they didn’t know for certain they would make the team. And they really didn’t know if they’d get to be on the starting line-up.

“It’s just not fair,” Bethany said. She was pacing in front of the notice board near the changing rooms. They were waiting for Miss Johnson to put up the list.

“I mean, if we had a Gladstone team this year,” Bethany went on, “we’d all be starters . . . easy!”

The others watched Bethany walk back and forth. “You said that already,” Jasmine said. “And you’re making me nervous with all your walking back and forth, and back and forth, and back and forth.”

“Nervous?” Anna joked. “You’re making me dizzy!”

Everyone laughed, except for Bethany.

“How could you be anything but nervous?” Bethany said. “Or sick? I’m both!”

“Try to relax,” Anna said. “Miss Johnson will be here with the list any minute now.”

“I can’t relax,” Bethany said. “I have to keep moving.”

“Hi, girls,” Miss Johnson said suddenly. “I think I have what you’re waiting for!”

“How does it look?” Bethany asked. She leaned over Miss Johnson’s shoulder as she put up the list. The other girls jumped up and ran over to the board.

“I think you’ll all be pretty pleased,” Miss Johnson said. She smiled and stood back.

“We all made it!” Jasmine said.

“Yes!” Sophie said.

“And you’re starting on defence, Jasmine,” Kate pointed out.

“And I’m starting in midfield!” Bethany shouted.

“I’m not surprised,” Jasmine said, giving Bethany a hug.
